St. Louis Cardinals 'Closing in' on Deal With Free Agent Infielder
· Yahoo Sports
Throughout this offseason, the St. Louis Cardinals' acquisitions have generally fit into one-of-two categories.
Either the acquisitions have been young players that fit with the Cardinals' rebuild, with little-to-no major league experience; or they've been cheap veterans the organization could flip for more assets in the future while providing veteran experience and lessons to the roster.

And St. Louis could be closing in on signing a player that fits in with the latter of the two descriptions.
According to a post on "X" from Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, infielder Ramon Urias met with the Cardinals on Friday and the two sides are "closing in" on the deal.
Sources say free agent INF Ramón Urías met with the Cardinals today and is closing in on a deal. Originally signed by St. Louis as a free agent from Mexico, the 31 year old righty had 11 HR and a .675 OPS for Baltimore and Houston in 2025.

Urias will enter his seventh major league season in the major leagues this year and 17th professional season overall in 2026.
Urias was originally signed by the Texas Rangers as an international free agent out of Mexico on Dec. 6, 2010. He spent eight years with the organization before he signed a minor league contract with St. Louis in 2018. He spent just under two years with the Cardinals and was designated for assignment Feb. 6, 2020.
Urias was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles on Feb. 11, 2020. The 31-year-old infielder truly found his footing with Baltimore. He made his major league debut in 2020, which began a five-and-a-half-year major league tenure with the O's.
Urias was with the Orioles until 2025. He won a Gold Glove as a third baseman in 2022. He was traded to the Houston Astros on July 31, 2025, in return for right-handed pitcher Twine Palmer.
Urias slashed .241/.292/.384 with a .676 OPS across 112 games last year with Baltimore and Houston. He hit 17 doubles and 11 home runs with 44 RBIs. His RBIs and homers were both the second-most in a single season in his career.

Urías had a down year in 2025 offensively slashing .241/.292/.384 for a .675 OPS and a 88 OPS+ with 11 homers, though for his career he is a .257/.321/.403 hitter for a .723 OPS and a 104 OPS+.

Urias would provide the Cardinals much-needed depth at the hot corner.
Currently, St. Louis does not have a player on the 40-man roster that has spent the entirety of a single-season at third base in the major leagues. The Cardinals traded away their established third baseman and multi-time Platinum Glove winner Nolan Arenado to the Arizona Diamondbacks this offseason.
Currently, FanGraphs' projects Nolan Gorman to be the team's Opening Day third baseman. Thomas Saggese, who's projected to be on St. Louis' major league roster as a bench player, also has experience at third base.
The Cardinals' top prospect and projected Opening Day second baseman, JJ Wetherholt, is also capable of playing third base.
