Colwill suffered an ACL injury before the start of the campaign, but is believed to be progressing well with his recovery.

Rosenior confirmed the England international is back running on the grass, but Matt Law admitted he’d be surprised if Colwill played this season.

Liam Rosenior hopeful Levi Colwill will play again this season

Chelsea have coped reasonably well in Colwill’s absence, and Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah have shown signs of forming a good partnership.

The Blues in fact have the fourth best defence in the league having conceded 30 goals, although they’ve only managed three clean sheets in Rosenior’s 11 games in charge.

Chelsea missed out on Jeremy Jacquet to Liverpool despite pursuing the France under-21 international for most of the January window.

The Blues will likely look for a centre back in the summer, but Rosenior has revealed he’s hopeful Colwill will play again this season.

“I’m hopeful,” he said as quoted by journalist Bobby Vincent.

“I’m hopeful because he’s an outstanding player. Again, no time frames.

“You have to take these long-term injuries day by day.

“And also, it’s not about when he comes back, it’s about him staying fit when he is back.”

Chelsea set for summer clear out at centre back

Whilst Colwill will be back next season, Chelsea’s centre back options could look very different to what they currently have.

It’s likely Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo will both leave, whilst it’s not been ruled out that Trevoh Chalobah could also be moved on.
