According to new reports, the relationship between Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau has “gotten much more serious” since the start of 2026.

A source tells Entertainment Tonight that Perry — whose most recent studio album, 143 , had a tepid reception when it debuted in 2024 and was described by Rolling Stone as a failed attempt to “rekindle her glory years” — “feels confident about herself with him.”

“ He is supportive of her and encouraging, and she feels confident about herself with him ,” the insider says. “ Justin came into Katy’s life at the perfect time . She is smitten with him.”

In some ways, it’s the ultimate comeback for Trudeau.

Trudeau needed bounce after resignation

When he resigned last January, the three-time prime minister left under a cloud — widely viewed as one of the most unpopular leaders the country has ever had.

A September 2024 poll by Angus Reid found that nearly two-thirds of respondents across Canada disapproved of Trudeau’s performance as prime minister. By the end of 2024, support for Trudeau had fallen to historic lows .

Months before he quit, a move driven in large part by Donald Trump’s return to the presidency with his threats of tariffs and 51st state taunts, some Liberal MPs called on Trudeau to resign as the party faced catastrophic defeat.

After he left office, Trudeau said he was “feeling serene about everything that I got done,” seemingly in disbelief that so many Canadians could have such disdain for him.

“ I’m feeling excited about being able to spend more time with my kids, excited about, you know, looking for other ways to contribute,” Trudeau said on an episode of PBS’ Canada Files (per Politico).

“I think I had a good run, and I’m feeling good about it, and glad to be handing off a party that’s healthy, to a strong leader that is going to keep fighting for the things that matter.”

Months later, Trudeau returned to the news after he was spotted on a dinner date with Perry — who apparently had no idea how disliked he was and still is by many Canadians.

‘Justin has been so persistent’

After the pair went Instagram official in December , a source told PEOPLE Perry was “excited to be dating him.”

“The only reason this turned into something real is because Justin has been so persistent,” the insider told PEOPLE. “She wasn’t looking to date when they first hung out and she certainly wasn’t looking for a boyfriend.”

The romance was described as an “exciting surprise” in Perry’s life. The pop star, who shares 5-year-old daughter Daisy Dove with ex-fiance Orlando Bloom, was said to be “flattered that he’s made such a big effort.”

“He’s shown her over and over again that he genuinely wants to see her,” the source said. “He’s flown all over the world to spend time with her while she toured. She likes spending time with him.”

The twosome also enjoyed a warm-weather getaway over the Christmas holiday.

In one pic shared to her Instagram, Trudeau was seen smiling as he swam in the water under a mostly clear sky. In another, Trudeau sported a wide grin as Perry nuzzled in for a kiss on the neck as the sun set in the background.

‘It’s for real’

In January, Perry supported Trudeau when he spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and touted Canada as an example of “ soft power .”

In an Instagram post earlier this month, the 41-year-old Dark Horse singer shared a new carousel of images, including two with the onetime drama teacher with the caption: “Let love be the revolution.”

In one photo, Trudeau and Perry were pictured wearing ski helmets and goggles as they posed on a snow-filled mountaintop. In another black-and-white snap, a perfectly coiffed Trudeau smiled alongside Perry during a dinner date.

Over Valentine’s Day last weekend, the twosome were spotted smooching at a restaurant. According to the Daily Mail , Trudeau has also reportedly showed Perry his new $4.26-million home on Montreal’s Outremont neighbourhood , where he lived with his ex-wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau in the early years of their marriage.

One source speaking to Page Six in December said the romance had given Trudeau an ego boost.

“He felt inadequate,” the source said.

But according to one person, despite the lovey-dovey Instagram photos, the pair were trying to be mindful of not splashing their relationship in front of everyone’s face.

“They’re cognizant about not going overboard. It’s not fake. Justin Trudeau – like him or don’t like him – Canadians are wonderful people. It’s for real,” they told Page Six .
