Sergio Garcia is on the outside looking in when it comes to the European Ryder Cup set-up right now.

The complete opposite is true for Rory McIlroy, who has played a key role for Team Europe in every event since 2010.

And the golfing legacies of the Spaniard and the Northern Irishman have headed in completely different directions over the past few years.

Garcia and McIlroy actually enjoyed many Ryder Cups together, notably the incredible win at Medinah in 2012 and the dominant wins in 2014 and 2018.

Luke Donald is someone who the Spaniard was very close with as well before he joined LIV Golf in 2022.

However, Garcia has not made the European Ryder Cup team since 2021, mostly due to the fact that he left the PGA Tour and DP World Tour to join LIV Golf back in 2022

The 46-year-old from Castellon is currently the highest points scorer in Ryder Cup history, and he will be desperate to add to his tally next year at Adare Manor.

With Garcia keen to rejoin the DP World Tour after his exit from LIV Golf, he may well be able to play his way back onto the Ryder Cup team.

During an interview with Golf Magic, Garcia was asked whether he has spoken to Donald about his chances of making the team at Adare Manor next year.

“I had a little chat with Luke in Ireland, mentioning that I was trying as hard as I could to make the team, and he said that he didn’t expect anything else, so that was nice,” revealed Garcia.

“I also told him that obviously if I couldn’t be there as a player that I would love to help in any way possible.”

Sergio Garcia was also asked whether he has spoken to any of the European players about a possible reintegration into the Ryder Cup setup.

“I haven’t really talked to Rory [McIlroy] about it much, but I have talked to Justin Rose and a couple of others, and obviously they are on the same page,” Garcia replied.

“If there is any way that I can help then they are happy for me to be there and that’s what I’m going to try to do. So we’ll see what the year brings us.”

The onus is now on Sergio Garcia to play some exceptional golf over the next nine months or so in order to qualify automatically for the Ryder Cup team at Adare Manor.

However, if he is unable to qualify, it’s highly unlikely that he will receive a captain’s pick, given how badly he has damaged some of his relationships within the game.
