It was all Rangers at the start of the game. Their forecheck was smothering the Flyers. They were maintaining possession of the puck and really putting the pressure on the Flyers. Philly was having a hard time breaking out of the defensive zone, and eventually, it would come back to haunt them.
A blast from the blue line found J.T. Miller’s stick in the slot, redirecting the puck to Gabe Perrault and past Joseph Woll and in for the early score, putting the Rangers up 1-0 over the Flyers in the first period.
The Rangers kept the good chances coming. With less than 5 minutes to play in the period, New York nearly tacked on another, but Woll made a great pad save on Tye Kartye to keep it a 1-0 game. Philly put forward a better effort in the second half of the first period, but were still not creating enough, if any, high-danger chances.
Despite going into the first intermission leading the shot battle 9-8, it was a very underwhelming first period for the Flyers. It felt like Rangers domination after the first 20 minutes, but it was only a 1-0 game.
Early in the 2nd period, the Rangers nearly took the 2-0 lead, but Simon Benoit made an incredible stop with his stick to stop the puck from crossing the goal line, keeping the Flyers within one. Benoit then kept his best period as a Flyer going, scoring his first goal as a Flyer right around the halfway mark of the game, tying it up at 1.
Noel Acciari then gave the Flyers the lead in the second period following a great pass from Denver Barkey, setting Acciari up for the easy score. Just as everyone thought, Benoit and Acciari gave the Flyers their first lead of the game. Each team had a power-play opportunity before the period came to an end, but neither was able to cash in. That brought the game to the second intermission with the Flyers up 2-1, but the Rangers leading in shots 18-17.
The third period was very slow-moving, especially compared to the first two. There was not much going on in the first 10 minutes, other than a few decent chances for each team. That was playing in the Flyers’ favor, as they just needed to bleed the clock down against the Rangers, who had yet to have a comeback win this season.
It was the Rangers who got what they needed. On the power play following a soft call on Denver Barkey, Pavel Dorofeyev tied the game at 2 with just over 6 minutes to play. Moments later, they took the lead, courtesy of Kartye.
Philly pulled Woll late, giving the Flyers the extra attacker with 1:17 remaining. However, they were unable to score. That brought the game to its 3-2 final.
