Philadelphia 76ers forward LeBron James was criticised heavily by Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy for sipping a fan’s wine in the middle of a recent NBA game.

James created a viral moment of fan interaction during the 76ers’ 126-107 win over the Chicago Bulls, as James went out of bounds, spilling a little bit of a fan’s wine, and then took a sip of the same before handing the cup over and returning to the game.

While most saw it as a lighthearted moment of LeBron having fun, especially as a known wine connoisseur, Portnoy had an entirely different take on the incident.

Dave Portnoy slams LeBron James’ explanation for why he sipped on a 76ers fan’s wine

After LeBron explained in his post-game media comments that he took a sip of the fan’s wine out of curiosity to see if it was a good choice, Portnoy slammed the 41-year-old for admitting such a thing openly.

“The man sees wine. He has no impulse control. He has to taste it in the middle of working. But nah, he doesn’t have a problem. He’s not screaming out for help. I’m the crazy one.”

James is a known wine aficionado, but few have equated that with a drinking problem. While the optics of having a sip of wine in the middle of an NBA game are a little challenging to explain, it was clearly meant as a lighthearted moment.

Portnoy is equating it to a problem with alcohol for the NBA player with the most seasons, minutes and points under his belt. The argument is a bit of a stretch, but Portnoy’s main point likely is to illustrate that NBA players should not sip a fan’s wine during the middle of the game.

The fan in question also did not appreciate LeBron’s gesture, casually stating afterwards that he threw the cup out and ordered another one after the moment.

Even with these off-court issues and moments, LeBron is averaging 16.2 points, 7.3 assists and 7.0 rebounds in a complementary role for the 7-1 76ers.
