Tommy Carr saves Michigan from another crushing upset in win vs Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ − Michigan football barely beat Rutgers, 28-21, in Week 9 at SHI Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 31.
On a day when there was a prominent sign in the crowd calling for offensive coordinator Jason Beck to be fired, Michigan's offense showed signs of improvement and also some of the same shortcomings that cost them in the first seven games. This time, Tommy Carr came to the rescue in the second start of his career.

Carr made a big impact with his arm and his legs, finishing 22-for-27 for 266 passing yards and 54 rushing yards, with two rushing touchdowns and one through the air. He led Michigan on four scoring drives as well as two other drives that resulted in short missed field goals from kicker Trey Butkowski. The trouble was the run game averaged just 3.6 yards per carry and Michigan had 75 penalty yards on another mistake-filled day, including a controversial kick-catch interference call that overturned a muffed punt by the Scarlet Knights.
Bizarrely, a Rutgers team playing with a backup quarterback became the first team all season to score more than 20 points in a game this season against the Wolverines. Rutgers quarterback AJ Surace finished a measly 3-for-12, despite that leading to 123 yards.
The Wolverines looked to be in control early in the game, forcing a punt from Rutgers on the first drive of the game and then scoring touchdowns on their first two offensive drives, helping Michigan just out to a 14-3 lead. The Scarlet Knights scored again on their third drive, this time their first touchdown on a broken play when Michigan cornerback Smith Snowden fell down to set up an 80-yard TD.
After the Rutgers score, Michigan missed a field goal and Rutgers responded with another field goal to make it 14-13, which held as the score at halftime.
