Philadelphia is off to a 4-1 start to the 2026-27 season with its star talent meshing well; Tyrese Maxey (28.4 PPG) has led the way, but Joel Embiid (21.5 PPG) and Jaylen Brown (20.6 PPG) have also done their thing.
James, meanwhile, hasn't been putting up the gaudy numbers fans may have grown accustomed to over 24 years — and after being on the wrong end of some highlights against the Pacers, some even questioned whether Father Time had finally come for James' athleticism.
Make no mistake, though: James remains an elite player despite a more limited impact so far, as evidenced by his defensive and playmaking numbers.
Here are the numbers that say James doesn't yet deserve the "washed" tag that fans have recently pinned on him.

Stats that debunk LeBron James 'washed' theory
Over his first four games, James is on pace to set new career-lows in PPG (15.5), three-point percentage (23.1%) and free-throw percentage (61.9%) while putting up his lowest field-goal percentage (42.6%) since his rookie year. It's clearly been an adjustment for James to find opportunities to score on a team with Maxey, Brown and Embiid.
It didn't help that James was on the wrong end of some highlight clips recently against the Pacers.
Fans first began to poke fun at James due to a viral clip of him dancing, then proceeding to shoot a ball into the side of the backboard when warming up.

James also got blocked on a transition layup attempt by Jalen Slawson, who appeared to apologize to the legend afterward.

Later in the game, Andrew Nembard crossed James up and made him stumble, though he missed the shot afterward.

Considering NBA fans have been watching James dominate for over two decades, it was unusual to see him with a lack of athleticism or on the wrong end of a highlight. But those clips aren't telling a full story of James' impact for the 76ers so far, either.
On top of his 6.8 assists per game, often running the offense for Philadelphia, James has impressed on the defensive side of the ball. Entering Friday, he was holding opponents to 26.5% shooting as the primary defender, which was best in the NBA:
Best Defensive FG% In The 2026-27 NBA Regular Season (Min. 30 DFGA): 1. LeBron James — 26.5% 2. Landry Shamet — 27.3% 2. Trevon Brazile — 27.3% 4. Chet Holmgren — 28.1% 5. Kris Dunn — 30.3% 6. Anthony Edwards — 30.8% 7. Amen Thompson — 31.4% 8. Derrick Jones Jr. — 31.7% 8. Pelle Larsson — 31.7% 10. Ryan Kalkbrenner — 32.0%

Averaging 1.8 steals and 1.0 block per game, James has been an excellent defender so far this season — and considering the 76ers' offensive talent, it wouldn't be surprising if he's exerting a bit more energy into his defensive capabilities.
Overall, James has held opponents to 13-of-49 shooting when they're guarded by him.
After 5 games, LeBron is holding opponents to just 26.5% FG. They’re shooting 13/49 when guarded by him. That ranks Number 1 in the entire NBA. LeBron really traded his scoring for lockdown defense. https://t.co/qD5tti12cl

Eventually, the 76ers may need James to step up more as a scorer, especially in games where Embiid isn't playing. But between his passing and defense, there's no question he remains one of the league's most impactful players despite his offensive inefficiency so far.
After all, James signed with Philadelphia to compete for a title at age 41 — he's not going to breeze through the regular season at the same rate he once did. How James is evaluated as a 76er will come down to the team's accomplishments in May, and potentially June.
