Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White made headlines this year by declaring for the WNBA Draft and claiming to identify as women in an effort to protest trans inclusion. And Megan Rapinoe isn’t impressed.

The retired soccer star, who has long been an outspoken advocate for trans athletes, dismissed the pair’s stunt as “grifting” during a recent podcast appearance. She also called it “embarrassing.”

Kanter Freedom and White’s Stunt

Kanter Freedom, who retired in 2022, and White, who last played in the NBA in 2014, both announced plans to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft while claiming to identify as women. Kanter Freedom has said that his goal is to pressure the league into limiting participation to biological females.

A league source called the declarations “simply publicity stunts” that the league “won’t give oxygen to,” according to Yahoo Sports’ Cassandra Negley. Kanter Freedom was also removed from a Chicago Sky game in August after a verbal altercation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud.

This month, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert responded to a congressional inquiry from Republican lawmakers, writing that “only women are eligible to play in the WNBA” and that the two players are “both men,” according to PinkNews.

Rapinoe, meanwhile, has continued to defend trans athletes. In the same interview, she argued that “sports is not fair in any sort of way ever” and said she “can’t wait to see an elite, elite trans person play sports.”

‘Just Grifting’

During her appearance on Who’s With Me?, host W. Kamau Bell brought up Kanter Freedom and White, calling the pair “grifters.”

“Sad. Sad. I’m like, ‘Y’all have nothing better to do.’ What? Like, wow,” Rapinoe said on Who’s With Me? with W. Kamau Bell.

“Just grifting. It’s kind of— It’s embarrassing,” she added.

Bell went on to argue that both former players had turned to a “MAGA grift” and suggested that they would never truly be accepted by the people they were trying to appeal to.

“I think it’s so sad they both figured out the same grift at the same time cuz it makes it more obvious that it’s a grift because you both independently went the ‘I’m trans’ grift,” Bell said.

“And they still hate you,” Bell added.

Needless to say, Rapinoe doesn’t think the stunt is accomplishing much of anything.
