Another home win, two memorable comebacks and an historic record: The Red Bulls’ 4-0 victory over SV Elversberg was another impressive demonstration of just how strong they have been at the Red Bull Arena.

While everything seems to be going our way in Leipzig, it has been a different story on the road. Our boys will be looking to translate their impressive home form into equally impressive displays in their away games next week.
A clean sheet on his return
Ørjan Nyland played a key role in RBL’s ninth consecutive Bundesliga home win. Our goalkeeper made his first appearance for the Red Bulls since 27th May 2023, coming into a starting XI that featured eight changes.
The Norwegian was called into action during a difficult first half and produced an outstanding save to deny Elversberg’s David Mokwa, preventing the visitors from taking the lead. He went on to keep a clean sheet.
Ny’s performance helped us extend our winning run at home, while also maintaining our unbeaten record against promoted sides in the Bundesliga, which now stands at 41 matches. It was also our tenth consecutive competitive victory at the Red Bull Arena.
Two goals for Rômulo – and a baby on the way!
Head coach Martín Demichelis was also spot on with his decision to bring on Rômulo at half time. The Brazilian immediately providing an attacking boost, making us much more dangerous going forward.
Rômulo scored our second and fourth goals to register his first Bundesliga brace, but there was an even more special story behind his celebrations. After putting the ball under his shirt, he revealed the reason: “My wife is pregnant! I used to do that celebration for my brother, but now I’m going to be a father myself. So that celebration was for me and my wife.” The exciting news certainly seems to be giving him an extra incentive.
Abdoul Koné also had reason to celebrate. Our summer signing made his competitive debut for Leipzig when he came off the bench in the 87th minute – and wasted no time making an impact. After winning possession on the right flank in stoppage time, the youngster drove into the box and produced an audacious backheel assist for Rômulo. It took Koné mere minutes to register his first goal contribution for the club.
Baumi’s goalscoring instinct helps set a new record
Nobody was smiling more than Christoph Baumgartner, though. Having made his comeback from a lengthy injury lay-off in Madrid, Baumi was back under the Leipzig lights for the first time in over five months. “It was obviously something really special. After the personal highlight of playing at the Bernabéu, I was really looking forward to being back at home,” he explained.
And it took him just 12 minutes to mark his return with a goal. Having come off the bench, he positioned himself in exactly the right place to head home our third in the 84th minute. And what was his typically dry assessment afterwards? “I’ve still got that nose for goal, don’t you worry.”
The Austrian’s goal helped RBL set another record, which Rômulo then extended with his second of the afternoon. With four wins from four Bundesliga home games this season, we now boast an incredible goal difference of +18.
In doing so, the Red Bulls set a new Bundesliga record for the best goal difference after the first four home matches of a season. The previous record belonged to FC Bayern, who began last season with 17 goals scored and just one conceded.
Intent on turning things around on the road
As impressive as our home record has been, the contrast with our away form is stark. We’ve now lost five consecutive matches on the road, something we need to put right quickly, with two more tricky away fixtures coming up next week.
On Tuesday, we travel to third-tier Essen in the second round of the DFB-Pokal, before heading to Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga on Saturday. “We’ve got two really awkward opponents coming up. We need to head into those games with total belief,” Micho insisted.
Baumi also knows what needs to change: “The fact is, we want to do better away from home. We need to raise our energy levels and improve our performances.”
