⚽BOYS SOCCER - Division I

Smithfield 2, Classical 0

The Sentinels will enter the Division II boys soccer playoffs on a 10-match unbeaten run and as the top seed after blanking the Purple, 2-0, on a gorgeous fall Thursday night at Morro Athletic Complex.

Noah Albaret and Sebastian Santos each found the net early in the second half as Smithfield dealt Classical just its second league defeat of the season. The Sentinels are all but certain to remain in front of Scituate in the RPI standings and will receive a bye into next week's quarterfinals.

Smithfield found the breakthrough it needed through Albaret in the 46th minute. Steven Coutcher knocked one down in front and Albaret was waiting, pulling his shot inside the left post. That gave the Sentinels a 1-0 edge and some momentum.

Smithfield (14-2-1) doubled the lead with some insurance in the 54th minute after serving in a free kick off the right side. Senai Zerit made a couple fine saves from close range, but Santos finally stuck away a rebound off an Ethan Cataldo shot to make it 2-0.

The Purple (8-2-6) were under pressure early but came inches from opening the scoring late in the first half when a Marc Lombardi-Ortiz header caromed off the right post and away. Classical saw another chance turned aside when Jakob Johnson parried a 20-yard shot from Lombardi-Ortiz comfortably over the crossbar.

That was the last of the real chances for the Purple, who entered the night at the No. 3 seed and could still avoid an uncomfortable preliminary match this weekend. This result ended their own 10-match unbeaten run, a stretch dating back to a 4-1 loss against Central Falls on Sept. 15.

⚽GIRLS SOCCER - Division I

Chariho 2, East Providence 0

Chariho scored twice in the first half and relied on a strong defensive effort to earn a 2-0 victory over East Providence.

Eiley Simmons put Chariho ahead just three minutes into the game, winning the ball outside the 18-yard box before firing a shot past the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Finley Campbell set up Dylan Whitman, who drove past a defender and finished to double the advantage.

Chariho controlled possession for much of the game, but East Providence packed its defense and made it difficult for the Chargers to find open passing lanes and generate quality chances.

Savana Debont-Fitzgerald preserved the shutout with four saves in goal for Chariho. East Providence's goalkeeper turned aside six shots.

Moses Brown 1, Smithfield 0

Avery Butler provided the game’s only goal for the Quakers, converting a penalty kick with Rose Couto credited with the assist. Moses Brown goalkeeper Marielle Nassiff made the lead stand with nine saves to earn the shutout.
