Marcus Freeman Talks Notre Dame's 28-24 Loss To BYU On The Road

· Yahoo Sports

For the first time in 17 games, Notre Dame will have to deal with the sting of defeat. The Irish traveled out west to take on the undefeated BYU Cougars inside of LaVell Edwards Stadium and, despite a valiant 2nd half comeback, came up short against the Cougars who advance to 6-0 on the season. This was a forgettable performance by the coaching staff and some of the key players on offense and defense. Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman spoke about the loss after the game came to a close.

Here are some of the main quotes from Freeman's post-game press conference:

FREEMAN ON THE LAPSES IN DEFENSIVE EXECUTION

"They were doing a lot of misdirection," Freeman explained. "Some was trick plays and when you face an offense that is doing some of those things,  you have to have discipline. We were lacking some discipline in the first half with our eyes. You can run the same call ten times in a row and nine times. You're chasing after the ball, and they were never running bursts or throwback. Well, guess what? On the 10th one, if you don't stay backside, you'll get burned. A couple times that happened in the first half. We just weren't playing disciplined. I thought they cleaned it up, played better in the second half, though."

FREEMAN ON WHAT WENT INTO CJ CARR'S DECISION MAKING

"I don't know," Freeman stated. "I mean, it wasn't his preparation. You know, some of those big plays that we usually hit, we weren't executing on them. We weren't hitting them. And I don't know if it's CJ [Carr's] fault. I don't know if it's the wide receiver's fault or accumulation of them both. But we weren't hitting on those type of plays that we've been doing with as much success as we've been doing. So we've got to look at it and see what happened."

FREEMAN ON WHAT BYU'S DEFENSE WAS DOING TO LIMIT THE OFFENSE AFTER THE TURNOVERS

"They were stopping the run and putting us in some difficult passing situations that were third and long and weren't able to convert," Freeman shared. "They were playing well. I'm more worried about us and what we got to do in those situations. We can't go three and out on, I think, both of them. We went three and out and had to settle for field goals, which, I mean, again, you get the ball on the plus 41 and the plus 24, you got to score touchdowns in the red zone. We weren't able to do that, and we got to have a better plan in that situation."
