The Seminoles had a great shot to snap their 10-game road losing streak, going up 14-0 in the first quarter and driving to Louisville's two-yard line on their third drive. It wasn't meant to be, as they turned it over on downs, sparking a 35-0 run by the Cardinals, who turned it into a rout.
The Seminoles have now lost their last 11 road games under Norvell and their last 12 games overall away from Doak Campbell Stadium. The last true road win came against the Florida Gators on Nov. 25, 2023. They have also struggled at home, going 10-8 in their last 18 home games.
They have been nowhere near the standard that Bobby Bowden established and Jimbo Fisher continued, but it won't be cheap to move on from Norvell, despite it feeling more and more inevitable.
According to Dan Rorabaugh of USA TODAY Sports, his buyout is $47.7 million if he is fired before Dec. 1, 2026. That would be the third-biggest in college football history, behind only the $76.8 million the Texas A&M Aggies paid Fisher and the $54 million the LSU Tigers paid Brian Kelly. The Seminoles paid Willie Taggart $18 million when they fired him during the 2019 season, setting up the Norvell hire.
Norvell is now 41-37 overall and 23-28 in ACC games in his seven seasons as FSU's lead coach. It will not be getting any easier for FSU moving forward; they will play the No. 4 Miami Hurricanes on the road this coming weekend before they enter their second bye of the season.
