Mike Breen is one of the most respected and beloved figures in NBA media. He has been the voice of the Finals for the modern fan, and his commentary is often reserved for the biggest games each year. Even the greats can get it wrong sometimes, though.
In the Philadelphia 76ers’ preseason clash, Breen claimed that LeBron had ‘let Joel Embiid hear it’ after Embiid arrived a couple of minutes late to practice. LeBron pushed back on Instagram, calling the story a lie as the center had not actually been late. The classy 65-year-old has now addressed the situation.
Mike Breen apologises for putting the story out, says anecdote’s intended effect was to show LeBron James’ leadership
When there are as many superstars on one roster as the current Philadelphia 76ers, there are constant questions about ‘whose team it is’. As such, any potential reports regarding conflict are immediately interpreted as possible discord within the team. This aspect is like what made LeBron refute it.
Breen spoke about the situation to ESPN, and provided an explanation for his decision along with an apology for putting out the story.
“I’m so disappointed how the story was interpreted,” Breen said. “The whole intent was praising LeBron for already having an impact on the team’s professionalism and accountability. For me, the fact that the teammate was Joel was meaningless. In hindsight, I should have realized the fact that it was Joel is what made it a story.
“I’ve always been a huge fan of Joel and feel awful that it put the focus on him the way that it did… I don’t know why the person who told me the story would make it up, but if LeBron says it never happened then I believe him and apologise for putting it out there.”
Breen is standing by his source, but has shown that there is nothing wrong with apologising when they are wrong, either. This is a great move from the play-by-play commentator, and one that fans will appreciate as well.
