JJ Redick Pushes Back on LeBron James Interpretation of Lakers Comment

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick made a bold comment that was perceived as a shot at LeBron James.

Redick clarifies his comments

During preseason media day, Redick said the 2026 roster was “probably the first time in my three years here, that I feel like the pieces actually fit together.”

Redick, though, meant it as a compliment to the entirety of the roster construction, rather than a shot at last year’s team.

“When I said the pieces fit, that’s more about having depth, having multiple ball handlers besides Luka and AR (in newcomers Colin Sexton and Quentin Grimes), having more shooting, more volume shooting, having an elite rim protector — the combination of all those pieces,” Redick said.

“And it’s having great wing defenders.

“I really believe in our wing group. I believe in their defense. I believe in their ability to make open 3s. (But) you don’t become a championship team (in late September). You have to become one throughout the season.”

What changes did the Lakers make?

The Lakers signed several players, including Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes, Walker Kessler, Zaire Williams, Matisse Thybulle, and Collin Sexton, among others.

With these additions, LA added wing depth, defensive switchability, and floor spacing, along with other players who complement stars Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic.

Reaves and Doncic get the focal point of ball-handling duties, without a third creator on the floor, unlocking the ability to have three complementary players on the court at once.

The defense should be better as a result, as LeBron James, at this point in his career, cannot defend like he once used to.
