A total of 26 players from the Ballard and Fern Creek high school football teams have been suspended as a result of the fight that ended their Oct. 1 game.

Ballard led Fern Creek 28-0 when the game was suspended by officials with 5:20 remaining in the fourth quarter. Video footage shows a Ballard player swinging at a Fern Creek player, leading to other altercations.

“We continually train our student-athletes to handle high-emotion moments properly,” Johnson said. “And we appreciate that the vast majority of our team remained on the bench. Coaches and staff on both sides did a great job containing the incident, and any student-athlete who left the sideline will be disciplined accordingly.”

Johnson added he expects both schools will be fined by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association but did not know an amount.

The suspensions will leave both teams shorthanded as they open district play Oct. 9.

Ballard (1-5) is set to open Class 6A, District Five play at 7:30 p.m. at No. 1-ranked Trinity (6-1).

Fern Creek (1-5) will host Bullitt East (4-2) at 7:30 p.m. in both teams’ Class 6A, District four opener.
