If you’re a hoop fan, then you’ve likely heard of the term “superstar treatment.” This pertains to the idea that the league’s biggest stars usually get calls or no-calls that go their way. Guys like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James are just some of the players throughout history who supposedly enjoyed getting a pass from the referees. One former league official, however, refutes that claim. According to Derek Richardson, there really isn’t such a thing as preferential treatment for the game’s biggest names. “No, because number one, every play gets reviewed, and if I’m in the bottom-third, they are not even considering me for the playoffs,” Richardson explained on an episode of Byron Scott’s Fast Break podcast. “So people think that we give Mike, Kobe, LeBron, these preferential treatments instead of just one simple thing: they know how to play.”
