Bronny James talks about becoming a veteran on the Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have undergone a lot of roster turnover over the last few years. Right now, Austin Reaves, who is going into his sixth season with them, is their longest-tenured member. After that, their second-longest-tenured player is Jarred Vanderbilt.

Bronny James, at first glance, wouldn't seem to be one of the men who has been with the Lakers the longest. But he's going into his third season with them, and the 21-year-old is looking to establish an identity outside of his famous father, who is now with the Philadelphia 76ers.

While talking to the media on Saturday, James talked about how he's continuing to establish himself as a standout on the defensive end. He then commented on how he's now one of the longest-tenured members of the Lakers.

“It’s me, AR, Vando and then DK,” James said. “It’s crazy, right? AR keeps calling me a vet, I’m like, ‘I guess.'”

He then said that he's trying to take on more of a leadership role with this new-look roster.

“I mean that’s what a point guard is,” James added. “You gotta be talking to your guys, you gotta be helping people get to where they need to be. I think I’m taking pride in that for sure. If anyone is out, God forbid anyone goes out, I gotta be the guy that steps up and be the primary ball-handler and get my guys in the right spots, stuff like that. So yeah, I gotta lock in on that for sure.”

James may not get any significant playing time on this season's team unless one of its main ball-handlers, such as Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves and Collin Sexton, gets injured, as was the case late last season when he got meaningful playing time toward the end of the schedule. But his work ethic and attitude have always been solid, and he showed some growth last season, especially in terms of his 3-point shooting.
