Uttarakhand: ‘Mohammed’ Deepak gets bail day after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting trader

An Uttarakhand court on Friday granted bail to Dehradun gym owner Deepak Kumar, a day after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a trader, reported PTI.

Kumar had in January opposed the harassment of an elderly Muslim shopkeeper by alleged Bajrang Dal members. When the group questioned him, he had told them his name was “Mohammad Deepak”. He later explained that he intended to convey that he was an Indian and that everyone is equal before the law.

On Thursday, Sanjeev Tonk, a businessman, alleged that Kumar had abused and assaulted him for a comment he had made on one of the social media posts by the gym owner.

Kumar had purportedly uploaded a social media post about the Ujjain municipal authority demolishing a portion of a mosque as part of a road-widening project ahead of the Hindu religious gathering called the Simhastha Kumbh Mela.

The court on Friday granted bail to Kumar after asking him to furnish three bonds of Rs 50,000 each, assuring that he would not cause any breach of peace over the next six months, reported The Indian Express.

The first information report against Kumar was initially registered under provisions pertaining to criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
