The Bruins (2-0-0) beat the Winnipeg Jets (0-0-1) 4-3 in overtime on Friday night, spoiling their home opener at Canada Life Centre. JJ Peterka (2) scored the game-winner, the first overtime goal of his five-year career. James Hagens (1) scored the first goal of his NHL career, and both Hampus Lindholm (1) and Elias Lindholm (1) got on the board.

Jeremy Swayman made 30 saves in his second straight win.

Dylan DeMelo opened the scoring at the 4:54 mark. The Bruins killed a Jonathan Aspirot cross-checking minor, but got caught in a bad line change shortly after. Morgan Barron played the puck to DeMelo at the point, and he fired and beat Swayman.

Mark Kastelic and Tyrel Bauer dropped the gloves for an old-school, spirited bout. The 6-foot-3 Jets defenseman, in his NHL debut, surrendered an inch and 24 pounds in the fight, but both guys landed right hands up high. Bauer caught Kastelic in the nose, which drew blood, and sent Kastelic to the locker room for repairs.

Just over two minutes after the fight, Hampus Lindholm tied the game with a point shot. Morgan Geekie teed it up for Lindholm, who connected on a one-timer and beat Stuart Skinner glove-side.

Kastelic returned to the ice nine minutes after his fight. In his first shift back, he drove the puck to the net and set up Nikita Zadorov for a quick shot off Skinner’s pads. James Hagens was planted to Skinner’s left and tapped home the rebound for his first career NHL goal.

Hagens’ goal gave the Bruins their first lead of the night.

Kyle Connor erased that lead early in the second period. Elias Lindholm tripped Brad Lambert and went to the box for a minor penalty. Only 16 seconds into the power play, Connor picked up a loose puck and beat Swayman five-hole.

The Bruins got two opportunities on the man-advantage during the second period, but only got one shot through to Stuart Skinner. On the second power play, Mason Lohrei replaced Hampus Lindholm, but it did not change too much for the Bruins.

Late in the second, with clock troubles at Canada Life Centre, Mario Ferraro scored his first goal as a Winnipeg Jet. Ferraro collected a feed from Adam Lowry and beat Swayman from 56 feet out to reclaim the Jets’ lead.

The Bruins pushed in the third period, but Stuart Skinner stood tall. David Pastrnak sprung JJ Peterka on a breakaway, but Skinner made the stop. Will Borgen beat Skinner, but rang the post with just over five minutes to go in regulation.

Marco Sturm used his only timeout with 1:44 remaining in the third period, and power-play specialist Steve Spott drew up a play with the Bruins’ net empty. Off the ensuing faceoff, Elias Lindholm redirected a shot from David Pastrnak to tie the game.

For the first time of the 2026-27 season, the Bruins needed more than 60 minutes to decide the game.

Neal Pionk turned the puck over to David Pastrnak, who was on for a long shift. Pastrnak carried the puck down the ice, and JJ Peterka used his advertised speed to blow by Gabe Vilardi and create a 2-on-1. Pastrnak played the puck to Peterka, who closed in and beat Skinner five-hole.

It was Peterka’s second goal in a spoked B and the first overtime winner of his NHL career.

The Bruins are quickly heading to the airport for a late-night flight to the Twin Cities. They will complete their quick road trip on Saturday night, meeting the Minnesota Wild (1-0-0) for their home opener.
