ESPN recently released their rankings for the NBA’s best players ahead of the new season. Nikola Jokic is the man in No. 1, followed by Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Luka Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo make up the Top 5.
The man in sixth place is none other than NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson. While he hasn’t quite enjoyed as much regular season success as the names above him, he has proven his greatness in the playoffs. And at least one former champion thinks he needs to be much higher on this list.
Lamar Odom says Jalen Brunson ‘gotta be 1 or 2’ on ESPN’s top 100 players in the NBA list
Lamar Odom is a former NBA Sixth Man of the Year and a two-time champion with the Los Angeles Lakers. When it comes to winning championships and what it means, few players understand the impact as well as he does.
He was recently asked about his thoughts on this list, and he took the time to stick up for Brunson. Odom explained that the Knicks guard has earned the right to be placed first or second at worst.
“How he gonna be six when he won a championship?” Odom asked, when told about the Brunson ranking. “Gotta be 1 or 2. It’s him Wemby, and Shai. Him, Wemby, Shai, Joker, Giannis.
Odom was then told that Luka was in the top 5 at 4th place. Odom then gave his top five. He said, “I’d say Brunson and Wemby gotta be 1 and 2. And then Shai, then Joker, then Giannis… It’s hard, they all great. You can’t compare greatness.”
While this list may have felt disrespectful to Knicks fans or Brunson, it does need to be said that he needs to have a much better regular season to warrant being above all those other stars. His championship will age better and place him higher in the long run, though.
