Messi and Lamine, considered the past and future of football, of course locked horns on the grandest stage in the game this past summer.
After Argentina and Spain battled their way to respective World Cup finale berths, the two attackers went head-to-head with the title of world champions on the line.
When all was said and done, it was the latter who emerged deserved victors, after a dominant showing across the 120 minutes.
And after the full-time whistle brought proceedings to a close in New York, it was the aforementioned Messi and Lamine who took their place centre stage in the headlines.
After the latter spotted one of his footballing idols downed and defeated on the turf, Lamine made a beeline for Messi, pulling the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner in for a warm embrace.
And as alluded to above, this weekend, the 19-year-old revealed precisely what words he passed on during the exchange. Speaking during an interview with The Guardian, as cited by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Lamine explained:
“I went to Leo Messi and said: thank you.
“I just thanked him a lot for everything he has done and how he’s the best. I’ve always believed he is the best.
“I always try to distance myself a little from things that seem beautiful for show. The moment came from within. I saw him there, so I went to thank him for what he did for football; it came spontaneously.”
