Indiana Pacers' Tyrese Haliburton, Reggie Miller talk using the choke sign vs. New York Knicks

The Indiana Pacers are getting the fans revved up for the 2026-27 season with a conversation between Reggie Miller and Tyrese Haliburton. The pair have made most of the biggest shots in franchise's NBA history, and they take a half-hour to compare notes.

One specific move links them: the choke sign.

In the original, Miller flashed a choke sign at Knicks megafan and filmmaker Spike Lee as the Pacers beat the New York Knicks 93-86 in Game 5 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals at Madison Square Garden. Miller scored 25 of his 39 points in the fourth quarter of that game.

Haliburton reprised the move in Game 1 of the 2025 Eastern Conference Finals in Madison Square Garden, after he made what he thought was a game-winning 3-pointer that bounced high off the rim and dropped in at the buzzer after Indiana had rallied from a 14-point deficit in the closing 4 minutes. However, one of his feet was on the 3-point line, so the shot tied the score.

Haliburton turned toward Miller, who was announcing the game for TNT, as he flashed the choke sign as teammates mobbed him.

Indiana went on to win in overtime.

"I didn't think (the choke sign) was going to have the legs that it did all these years," Miller said. "I thought actually it was of kind of dead until someone had to bring it back."

Haliburton said that, soon after the Pacers traded for him in 2022, fans asked him to bring back the sign, but he was hesitant.

However, when just the right moment arrives ...

"You can't just do it. Is (the moment) right? And then the moment just happened the right way," Haliburton said. "And you were there, so it played all into it even better."

Miller said Haliburton's choke sign moment is genuine.

"And for the record, people always ask ... we never had any conversation about this. I had no idea," he said.

Haliburton and Miller cover a lot of great moments. Miller's 8 points in 9 seconds and his winning shot in Game 4 of the 1998 Eastern Conference Finals, and all of Hailburton's great moments in Indiana's 2025 NBA Finals run.

Haliburton thanked Miller for visiting him in the Pacers locker room at halftime of Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals, shortly after Haliburton suffered an Achilles injury that sidelined him for the 2025-26 season.

"That, forever, will be special to me. Had a group hug at that moment you let me cry in your arms, which I'll never forget. So I'm thankful for you forever," Haliburton said.

"I love the blending of eras. You play for the same that I always thought about: the fans, the city, the state. And you brought us back together, all again," Miller said.
