The Milwaukee Bucks’ four year, $64 million deal with Gary Trent Jr. remains under scrutiny as the NBA looks into the details surrounding the offseason agreement.
The circumstances surrounding Gary Trent Jr.’s new deal have added another layer to the NBA’s questions about Milwaukee’s offseason move. Trent was coming off a disappointing 20250-26 season when the Bucks agreed to pay him $64 million over four years. The Athletic’s Joe Vardon also pointed to the timing of the agreement, noting that many teams had already committed most of their available financial resources when the deal came to light.

“At least in the public realm, there is nothing like that with the Bucks and Trent, just questionable timing, including Trent’s aforementioned poor season, the Bucks’ change in direction as a franchise and a likely depressed market for Trent outside of Milwaukee,” wrote the NBA insider.

However, Trent’s four year agreement was not reported until July 11, almost two weeks after free agency began.
“Had the agreement with Trent come in the first few hours or even days of NBA free agency, according to rival league executives granted anonymity to discuss a player’s contract not with their team, the reaction in league circles would have been collective eye rolls and mockery, given Trent’s subpar 2025-26 performance,” Vardon continued.

The NBA’s review will determine whether the unusual circumstances surrounding the agreement raise any issues or simply reflect an uncommon free agency deal.
