The Colorado Buffaloes suffered an embarrassing 41–7 loss to Northwestern, raising concerns among fans about the direction of the program under head coach Deion Sanders. Although Colorado opened the 2026 season with two consecutive victories, the blowout defeat exposed several problems that the team must address.

During the latest episode of “The Right Time with Bomani Jones”, sports commentator Bomani Jones discussed Colorado’s disappointing performance and declared that the promise surrounding the Coach Prime era had faded.
“So this Colorado thing is over. The promise of what Deion Sanders could have been is over. The comparative advantage that you would have because Deion Sanders is your coach no longer matters. Colorado doesn’t have the money. And Deion sounded this alarm early. What do we need to get players? We need money. Deion came in the press conference and was talking about how he’s walking off the field and his players, after getting smashed like that, are laughing. He’s making it very clear in that press conference that he’s here to win.”

Colorado accumulated 348 total yards against Northwestern but repeatedly failed to turn its possessions into points. The Buffaloes committed four turnovers and failed on three fourth-down attempts, allowing Northwestern to take complete control of the game. Sanders was also frustrated after seeing some of his players laughing and joking while leaving the field following the program’s most lopsided defeat of the season.
Jones acknowledged that Sanders has always taken competition seriously, despite the flashy public image he has maintained throughout his career.
“You don’t get to be as good as these things that Deion has done unless you have been serious about them. Forget the football. You do not become a Major League Baseball player unless you are very serious about what you are doing. And Deion pulled that off while also playing all that football and running track and doing all these things. He is a very serious person about what he did on the field. And I think he cares very much about winning.”
Jones then questioned how Sanders’ personality and approach influence the players he coaches.
“When we think about Deion’s image as a football coach, we’re still talking about Deion’s image as Deion. The way that he positions himself before people is different than the other coaches do. He’s certainly allowed to be different in how he does it. But I do wonder, to a degree, what exactly does this signal to the people that are under your employ? What exactly does this signal to the people that you coach?”
Sanders’ personality will continue to attract national attention, but Colorado must now prove that his confidence can translate into discipline and consistent performances. The Buffaloes will have an opportunity to bounce back in Week 4 when they face the Baylor Bears.
