Jackson Ferris wins Pacific Coast League pitcher of week

The final week of the minor league regular season saw the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets get a clean sweep of Pacific Coast League honors. Jackson Ferris was named PCL pitcher of the week after the best outing by a Dodgers minor league pitcher this season.

Ferris on Monday joined teammate Alek Thomas, with the Oklahoma City center fielder capturing PCL player of the week.

Ferris last Wednesday against the El Paso Chihuahuas, a San Diego Padres affiliate, retired his first 19 batters faced in a 13-strikeout performance over 7 2/3 scoreless innings.

The 13 strikeouts are the most in a game by anyone in the Dodgers organization this season, majors or minors, and part of a string of excellent outings over the final five weeks of the season. And I’m not just saying that because he had a six-inning save on September 9.

Ferris has allowed zero or one run in six straight outings totaling just four runs over his final 36 innings of the season. That lowered his seasonal ERA from 7.15 to a a final 5.12 mark after last week’s gem.

Ferris was the No. 1 prospect listed on Monday at Baseball America’s hot sheet for his recent performance.

“The outing closed a sizzling stretch that saw Ferris cook the competition in his final six starts. Over the 30-day span, Ferris went 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA and just 22 hits and 11 walks in 36 innings,” Josh Norris wrote at Baseball America. “The 48 strikeouts he racked up in that span were the most in all the minor leagues.”

Oklahoma City Comets won nine Pacific Coast League player or pitcher of the week this season by eight players — James Tibbs (March 31—April 5 and May 25-31), Alex Freeland (May 11-17), Jack Suwinski (June 9-14), Ryder Ryan (June 9-14), Emmet Sheehan (August 17-23), Cole Irvin (September 7-13), Alek Thomas, and Ferris.
