Chiefs Face More Injury Uncertainty As Colts Contest Looms

The Kansas City Chiefs released their injury report today, and as usual there’s a bit of intrigue involved, according to an update from Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk

Specifically, the players here are defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback Mansoor Delane, with both tagged as questionable for the Sunday night home game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Jones was limited in practice all week, although he did play against Denver. He had just one tackle to go with a huge fumble recovery, but rookie Peter Woods stepped in and had a pair of tackles, one solo, to go with a pass defended, which certainly isn’t something you’d expect to find on the defensive tackle’s stat line.

Delane moved up to a full participant after re-injuring his shoulder against Denver, but he was dropped down to “limited work,” per Alper, to close out the week.

That may be a bit of subterfuge or manipulation from coach Andy Reid, who has been known to dabble in such things in his injury report, although the designation could also be about the Chiefs' babying Delane a bit given how well he played in his brief cameo.

Left tackle Josh Simmons and defensive back Chamarri Conner were both ruled out for the second straight week, with Simmons experiencing back problems and Conner having a knee situation. Simmons should be experiencing a bit of urgency in his comeback effort, as his replacement, Kahlil Benson, was lauded for his run blocking as RB Kenneth Walker III had a big game.

The big news for the Colts is about their depth chart at quarterback. Anthony Richardson is set to be the primary backup against the Chiefs on Sunday night, per a separate report from Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk

Richardson has been a controversial figure for several years now for the Colts. He’s an incredibly athletic, but he can’t throw accurately, nor can he stay on the field. Coach Shane Steichen said that Richardson “tweaked his groin” while lifting weights earlier in the week, which is sort of a typical Richardson injury. Riley Leonards is listed as the Colts’ third quarterback, and he should be able to step up if Richardson can’t go.

There’s more injury news in Indy as well. Receiver Ashton Dulin was ruled out for Week 2 with an ankle injury, per Simmons. Fellow receiver Alec Pierce was back practicing on Friday after missing practice on Thursday.

The Colts lost their opener to the Baltimore Ravens, 41-23, as RB Derrick Henry scored three touchdowns on the ground to go with 324 yards from quarterback Lamar Jackson in the air.
