Cubs players swarm winner's circle after Alex Bregman's horse wins at Churchill Downs

The Chicago Cubs were off on Thursday. That doesn’t mean they didn’t have something to win.

With the team about to begin a road series against the Cincinnati Reds, the entire roster seemingly opted to hop the Ohio-Kentucky border and travel to Churchill Downs, where Alex Bregman’s horse Act of Parliament was competing in the final race of the slate.

Act of Parliament won a thriller, starting near the back of the park and slowly making up ground on the outside, then erasing a length-plus gap in the final stretch for the win.

The Cubs players were fully invested. Bregman posting pictures on his Instagram story of multiple teammates wearing jockey uniforms on the team plane, as well as video of Pete Crow-Armstrong meeting the horse before the race with the caption “PCA pep talk we couldn’t lose,” which can only help the MVP campaign.

The team celebrated raucously after Act of Parliament crossed the finish line, later hoisting jockey Axel Concepcion on their shoulders.

Via MLB.com, Bregman has been a horse racing fan his entire life, something he takes from his family, and made a formal entry into the world when he opened Bregman Family Racing in 2021 alongside his wife Reagan, who also grew up racing horses.

Bregman Family Racing has seen its horses record a total of 90 starts since then.

Act of Parliament’s win paid out $8.68 off a $2 bet to win and earned Bregman a $27,108 prize per Bloodhorse.

However, that appears to be the end of Bregman’s association with the horse, as it was a maiden claiming race, in which all of the horses were up for immediate sale. According to Equibase, Act of Parliament was one of five horses claimed by a new set of owners at a price of $20,000 each.

With a horse racing win under their belt, the Cubs have nine games left to play in the regular season. Their record currently sits at 85-68, tied with the Philadelphia Phillies for the top wild-card spot (Chicago owns the tiebreaker) and have a five-game cushion over the Arizona Diamondbacks to make the playoffs.

If the playoff picture holds, they will host the Phillies in the NL wild-card round.
