Toto Wolff jokes about ‘idiot’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli causing grey hairs with youth exuberance, pushing when not needed to cause track limits.
Already in British GP, it has hurt Mercedes’ Antonelli with track limits after he dropped out of points. At other events as well, he often finds himself pushing in the car for the fastest lap when not needed. In F1 Spanish GP, he did so on the last lap despite the dominant lead and the win in his pockets.

Wolff Jokes by Calling Antonelli Idiot
He was already marked by his race engineer regarding track limits in the race but he still went for it, showcasing his youth style. Wolff joked with his father about “idiot” Kimi – all in fun – but the Mercedes F1 team principal revealed how much they have had to push him to not do it.
He is causing them grey hair hairs certainly, but Wolff reckons probably this is what makes him quick on track and be so dominant in F1 race wins to eke out 81 points lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell in the drivers’ championship, which has forced the Brit to all but give up on 2026 chances.
Wolff Tried Everything to Get in Antonelli’s Head
“That’s just Kimi, he can’t hit the white lines…we had to drum it into his head that he shouldn’t go over the white lines, even after Monza number one he still went over the white lines and shunted the car,” said Wolff to media after F1 Spanish GP.
“And the same with track limits, and at a certain stage I said to him, “Don’t you see out of the car? You need to see, you have high arms, that you have those track limit things.” And so we had a laugh about it and in Madrid six laps to the end or whatever it was, he says, ‘check the car, I just brushed the wall’.
“Yeah, so he’s causing us grey hair. But I just tell him, maybe he’s like this and maybe that’s what’s making him so quick,” summed up Wolff, who is in full praise mode of Antonelli, as the Italian is on course to help Mercedes get back on the top spot in the drivers’ championship, since the disappointing loss against Red Bull and Max Verstappen in F1 2021.
