76ers Get Powerful Reality Check From 2x NBA Champion on LeBron James-Led Superteam

Two-time NBA champion Mario Chalmers gave the Philadelphia 76ers a reality check ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Philadelphia is viewed as one of the best teams next season. After trading for Jaylen Brown and signing LeBron James, the team has formed a new superteam. They’ve added two new All-Stars who will help Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid. Upcoming sophomore guard VJ Edgecombe showcased star-caliber promise after finishing third in last season’s Rookie of the Year race.

On Tuesday, Chalmers talked to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson. During their interaction, the former NBA guard said the current Philly roster reminds him of the 2011 Miami Heat.

“When you have three great superstars that come together on one team, somebody has to take a backseat for everybody to be successful… They also have young guys in Maxey and VJ who are still trying to establish themselves in the league and become household superstars,” he said.

“Then you’ve already got two in Jaylen Brown and Embiid, plus one of the greatest players ever in LeBron out there. It’s definitely going to take time for them to gel.”

The 2011 Heat was the favorite to win the NBA title. Although they reached the Finals, they were outplayed by the Dallas Mavericks, led by Dirk Nowitzki. Fortunately for Miami, they bounced back the following year and won a championship.

Chalmers believes the 76ers need time to develop their chemistry. With four star players on the roster, they will need to share the ball and adjust to having only one basketball on the court.

Tyrese Maxey Expects No Ego From the 76ers

Making a superteam work requires certain players to step into lesser roles. 76ers star Tyrese Maxey emphasized in an interview with HoopsHype that setting aside egos and committing to sacrifice will be crucial for the team’s success in the upcoming season.

“I think the biggest thing is we can’t have anybody, nobody on this team can have an ego. We have two guys that have won regular-season MVPs, two guys that have won Finals MVPs, multiple gold medal winners on this team, multiple 25-plus points per game, All-Stars, All-NBA,” Maxey said.

The star guard stressed that putting egos aside will be a collective effort rather than the responsibility of a single player. Fans will get their first look at how the Big 4 operates together when they kick off the regular season against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 20.
