The Los Angeles Lakers have a lot of things to clean up on the roster, especially as they currently sit with one more player than the allowed roster limit. The team has over a month to make the final decision, but there are guys hanging on right now.
LA is entering the Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves era, which should be exciting. However, before it officially starts, the Lakers will likely move on from one of these three guys.
“Clearly, the Lakers need to dump someone, and I think it's going to be one of three players," Lakers insider Jovan Buha said. "It's going to either be Dalton Knecht, Jaden Hardy, or Bronny James."
All eyes are on the roster construction of the team as they may have to give up one of those guys mentioned if they are not traded. It is just a matter of who. The most likely one right now seems to be Dalton Knecht.
“My assumption is that if they had to make a decision right now, they would not pick up the $6.4 million team-option on Dalton Knecht. He's got between now and Halloween to change their mind,” Lakers analyst Trevor Lane said.
Bronny James is also an option, though, and LA will have no problem getting rid of him if he doesn’t perform in training camp. Lake Show Life’s Tyler Watts detailed what Bronny James needs to do to remain on the roster.
“The Los Angeles Lakers need Bronny James to embrace being Cason Wallace. The Thunder won a championship and reached two straight conference finals with Wallace buying into playing defense, shooting went open, and taking on a lesser role. James needs to be fully bought in to doing those little things to crack the Lakers rotation and get a second contract in LA,” Watts wrote.
If James can play like an NBA champion who knows his role, Watts believes he is going to be just fine. This is a critical year for James, as this can make or break his future in the league.
The Lakers no longer have LeBron on the roster, so there is no obligation to keep Bronny on the team if he doesn’t perform or improve. The opportunity is right there for James, but if he shows up to training camp without any improvements, he could be cut. Just do what is asked of him, and he will be fine.
