The Cincinnati Bengals started the 2026 season with a huge victory on Sunday. Cincinnati defeated Tampa bay 33-27 on the backs of their improved defense. The Bengals have a lot to improve, but that isn’t stopping one NFl insider from speeding up their hype train.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated is more excited than ever about the Bengals following Week 1. The reason he’s so excited is because Cincinnati’s biggest stars did not play well against Tampa Bay.
“This, by the way, was a game where Burrow was held to 254 passing yards, and threw the aforementioned pick, the run game needed 27 carries to get to 106 yards, and Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins combined for five catches for 71 yards,” Breer wrote. “The key there is the Bengals’ Supermen didn’t need their capes on Sunday. And if that continues to be the case, the Bengals will be that much more dangerous.”

The Bengals’ offense was clearly not at full strength against the Buccaneers. They did manage 351 total yards of offense, which is above their 329.2 average yards per game from last season. Still, a simple look at the box score shows that Cincinnati could have accomplish more on the offensive side of the ball.
Ja’Marr Chase is the most obvious player who had a tough game. He only managed two receptions for 12 yards on just four targets. Chase had been dealing with a knee injury before Week 1, which could explain part of why he didn’t play a big role.
Fortunately, the Bengals were able to rely on their defense to get the big Week 1 victory. That has not been a possibility in recent seasons, which shows just how much Cincinnati has relied on their offense lately.
It will be fascinating to see if Cincinnati’s offense can take a step up next week. That could be a tough task against one of the NFL’s best defenses.
Next up for the Bengals is a road game against the Texans. This AFC showdown kicks off at 1PM ET on September 20th from NRG Stadium in Houston.
