Ben Shelton speaks out on ‘difficult day’ while sending a message to families impacted by 9/11

After his win over Frances Tiafoe, Shelton eloquently spoke about being the first Black man to play in the US Open final since Arthur Ashe. He also thanked his parents and his family for all their efforts.

It would have been understandable for Shelton to be focused on himself immediately after the game. However, he showed his class with his message to everyone impacted by the tragedy.

“One more thing, it’s a difficult day to be out here playing,” Shelton said. “My thoughts and prayers go out to all families who are impacted by 9/11.

“This is one of the greatest cities in the world and one of the biggest tragedies. Thoughts and prayers to everyone involved and affected.”

The horror of 9/11 will never be forgotten by New York, America, or the world. Shelton’s humility to pay tribute to those who suffered in this moment shows why so many people root for the 23-year-old.
