Assam: Ex-IAS officer gets BJP ticket for Nagaon bye-poll a week after taking voluntary retirement

Former Indian Administrative Services officer Devashish Sharma, who took voluntary retirement last week, was on Friday named the Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bye-poll in Assam on October 6, The Indian Express reported. .

Sharma resigned as Nagaon’s deputy commissioner on September 3 and joined the BJP on Thursday.
A 2011-batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Sharma was appointed deputy commissioner of Nagaon in June 2025, The Indian Express reported. Before taking charge in Nagaon, Sharma served as deputy commissioner of neighbouring Morigaon district, which is also part of the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency.
The Congress has asked the Election Commission to “review and scrutinise” all the poll-related actions taken by Sharma during his tenure as the deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer, the newspaper reported.
Congress MP Rakibul Hussain wrote to the poll body, raising concerns that Sharma was responsible for electronic voting machines, polling arrangements, staff deployment and implementing Election Commission directives, among other key aspects of the polls in the constituency.
Nagaon, a Muslim-majority constituency in central Assam, has been held by the Congress for the past 10 years. However, its three-term MP Pradyut Bordoloi left the party earlier this year and joined the BJP.
