Houston Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley has identified cleaner pre-snap execution and improved tempo as priorities for quarterback CJ Stroud and the offense entering the 2026 season.

The Texans kick off their regular season this upcoming Sunday vs. the Buffalo Bills at Reliant Stadium, giving Caley’s unit its first opportunity to show progress after offensive inconsistencies last season. ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime took to X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday to share the offensive coordinator’s message about what the Texans offense must clean up as it prepares for Week 1.

Caley’s emphasis on tempo addresses an issue Houston has worked to correct since last season. The Texans struggled on offense early in 2025, ranking last in scoring through the first three weeks at 12.7 points per game before improving later in the season.
The operational concern extends beyond simply avoiding penalties. Getting out of the huddle earlier gives Stroud additional time at the line of scrimmage to identify defensive looks and handle the checks and protection adjustments built into Caley’s offense.
The Texans also enter 2026 seeking a steadier performance from their signal-caller after their previous season ended on a difficult note. Stroud threw four interceptions in the first half of Houston’s AFC Divisional Round loss to the New England Patriots on January 18.
The unit has also made improving their pre-snap process a point of emphasis entering Caley’s second season as offensive coordinator and play-caller. Head coach DeMeco Ryans previously identified getting the ball snapped before the play clock expired as an area that needed improvement.
Continuity within the Texans’ offensive system could also help the offense operate faster now that players have a year of experience with his terminology and concepts.
Houston’s Week 1 matchup will provide an immediate measure of whether Caley’s emphasis on cleaner execution and faster pre-snap operation translates to the field.
