Steelers provide update on Joey Porter Jr.'s status for Week 1

· Yahoo Sports

We're officially on Joey Porter Jr. watch for Week 1, as the Pittsburgh Steelers provided an update on his status for their regular-season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.

Courtesy of Friday's injury report, the Steelers revealed that Porter would be questionable to play in the Week 1 season opener against the Falcons.

Porter, who spent the entirety of training camp on the physically unable to perform list, was activated to the active roster a few weeks ago, opening the door for a potential Week 1 appearance. But as many fans are aware, his availability could have more to do with his contract negotiations than the mysterious back ailment he's been dealing with for the past few months.

If Porter doesn't suit up in Week 1, expect cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. to play a huge role alongside Jamel Dean. Samuel is coming off a terrific training camp and outstanding preseason performance, potentially earning more playing time even if Porter is cleared to play in Week 1.
