The Atlanta Falcons just revealed a massive injury update for the Pittsburgh Steelers, specifically regarding the availability of Tua Tagovailoa.

On Friday, the Falcons ruled out Tagovailoa with an oblique injury, clearing the way for former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush to get the starting nod for Atlanta.

Tagovailoa, who was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, played five seasons before being released in March 2026. Tagovailoa signed with the Falcons on a one-year deal and was seemingly primed for a shot at the starting job as Michael Penix Jr. recovered from a torn ACL in 2025.
It was previously revealed that Penix would be inactive in the Week 1 matchup against the Steelers, which means that rookie quarterback Jack Strand will serve as Rush's backup this Sunday.
Pittsburgh was dealing with a few injuries of its own over the past month, but luckily got healthy just in time for the season opener. The same can't be said for Atlanta, but here's to hoping the Steelers don't underestimate a severely weakened Falcons team in Week 1.
