The New Orleans Saints have a lot of reason for optimism coming into the 2026 season, and a lot of that has to do with second-year quarterback Tyler Shough. Shough didn’t begin his rookie season as the QB1 in New Orleans, but he took over for Spencer Rattler midseason and gave Saints fans hope that he might be the quarterback of the future.
Now, while the Saints as a team might not have high expectations in 2026, fans are hoping to see the former second-round pick solidify himself as the QB of the future with another strong season. He is clearly already making a good impression on his teammates, as the Saints elected him as one of their team captains for the 2026 season on Wednesday.
Shough doesn’t take that honor lightly and spoke about it after he was awarded the captaincy, per Mike Triplett.

“Saints QB Tyler Shough said being named a captain by his teammates in Year 2 is probably the biggest thing he’s accomplished in his career so far,” Triplett wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Also ‘more work to be done to keep earning it.'”
Head coach Kellen Moore also praised Shough for stepping up into a leadership role in New Orleans heading into his second season.
“Tyler earned being a captain on this football team for a reason,” Moore said. “Cause of his presence throughout the whole offseason and the preparation that he’s put into this. He does a really good job of being that vocal leader when necessary like so many of these guys, and so he’s done a nice job.”
The Saints have made an effort to surround Shough with the requisite weapons for him to succeed this offseason. They drafted Jordyn Tyson No. 8 overall to go next to Chris Olave at wide receiver and added running back Travis Etienne Jr. in free agency. Even with Tyson currently out with a hamstring injury, he is expected to contribute when he gets back. As a result, Shough should be set up for success in year two.
