Review: ‘Jeevan Ya Bheema Con?’ is insured against entertainment

Jeevan and Yojana want a bit of beema in their lives. The debt-ridden couple think they have come up with the perfect ploy to claim a hefty insurance pay-out.

Jeevan (Arshad Warsi) will fake his death, having miraculously found a spitting image in Bheema (Warsi again). Yojana (Sanjeeda Shaikh) will play the weeping widow for a respectable period and then collect the money.
How can’t it go wrong? Yojana is in too much of a hurry, summoning the insurance agent barely hours after the cremation. The gangsters Vinayak (Vijay Raaz) and Manu (Brijendra Kala) turn up at the couple’s home, lingering there for much of the duration of Jeevan Ya Bheema Con?
Threats are made; guns are waved; farts are discharged. The film’s sound designer hopefully had fun with the audio effects, because nobody else does.
It goes on in this fashion, coming alive when Vinayak wonders whether the so-not-dead man flailing before him is Jeevan or Bheema. Then the film goes back into sleep mode.
Based on a story by Vivek Verma, Jeevan Ya Bheema Con? (previously titled Jeevan Bheema Yojana) has a scattering of funny moments and an abundance of strained humour. Commenting on the business of lookalikes and talk of a missing diamond stash, a character says, what is this, an Abbas-Mustan movie?
