‘Too much’: South Africans react to new uShaka Marine World prices

uShaka Marine World introduced its latest annual price adjustment on 1 September 2026, with the new rates covering some of its most popular attractions, including Sea World and Wet ’n Wild.
The new prices have sparked a wave of reactions online, with several visitors questioning whether a trip to the Durban attraction is still affordable for families.
How much does it now cost to visit uShaka Marine World?
According to the latest price information, a ticket to Sea World costs:
- Adults: R267
- Children and seniors: R216
The same rates apply to Wet ’n Wild.
For a family of four consisting of two adults and two children, that works out to R966 for either Sea World or Wet ’n Wild.
The Sea World + Wet ’n Wild combo ticket costs:
- Adults: R399
- Children and seniors: R324
That means a family of two adults and two children would pay R1 446 for the combo before spending anything on food, drinks, parking or other extras.
For a single adult and child, a Sea World or Wet ’n Wild visit would cost R483, while the combo would cost R723.
‘Too much’ for families
The new prices quickly attracted attention on social media, with many South Africans saying the cost would make a visit difficult for larger families.
One commenter said the prices were too high and that people with bigger families could not imagine being able to afford a visit.
Another said the attraction should consider different prices for tourists and locals, while several others simply described the new rates as unaffordable.
“Prices were unaffordable for most before this increase… now even worse,” Laurene Tersia Harrison wrote.
Tammy Dreyer added: “Prices are unaffordable for a family!”
The cost of the combo ticket also raised eyebrows.
One person calculated the cost for two adults and two children at around R1 448, while another pointed out that even Wet ’n Wild alone would cost almost R1 000 for a family of four.
Others questioned whether increasing prices could ultimately discourage people from visiting.
“Instead of dropping the prices and get more people coming in you making it much more unaffordable for even less people to come,” Kevin Nagouran said.
Not everyone is giving up on uShakaAmid the criticism, some commenters pointed to cheaper ways of visiting the attraction.
One visitor highlighted a Monday off-season special for people aged over 61, saying the offer included access to the aquarium and animal shows.
This suggests that while the standard ticket prices may be out of reach for some families, there are promotional offers that could make certain visits cheaper.
Still, the reaction to the new rates shows that affordability remains a major concern for South Africans planning family outings.
For a family wanting to experience both Sea World and Wet ’n Wild, the R1 446 entrance fees alone is already a significant expense, even before the inevitable request for snacks, drinks and everything else that comes with taking kids to a theme park.
