SAFA confirmed Mosimane’s arrival on Tuesday morning as anticipation builds around his return to the national team setup.
PITSO MOSIMANE SET FOR BAFANA RETURN
Mosimane is no stranger to the South African post job, having previously guided the national team between 2010 and 2012.
His return represents a major appointment for South African football. He brings extensive experience at both domestic and continental level.
The 62-year-old has enjoyed a trophy-laden coaching career. Among them is winning the CAF Champions League twice with Mamelodi Sundowns and once with Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
He now faces the challenge of leading the nation into a new era following Hugo Broos’ departure. The timing of the appointment will be significant. South Africa are coming off a historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. They reached the knockout stages for the first time in the country’s history under Hugo Broos.

Pitso Mosimane now tasked with building on the foundation left by his predecessor. His immediate challenge will include navigating the upcoming AFCON 2027 qualification.
A PROVEN WINNER
Mosimane arrives with one of the most impressive coaching records in African football. He has accumulated 21 major titles during his managerial career. He enjoyed significant domestic and continental success with Mamelodi Sundowns and Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
His trophy cabinet includes five PSL titles with Mamelodi Sundowns, as well as the CAF Champions League in 2016.
He also guided the Brazilians to two Nedbank Cup triumphs and two Telkom Knockout titles, while adding the CAF Super Cup in 2017.
His success continued at Al Ahly, where he won back-to-back CAF Champions League titles in 2020 and 2021. He also claimed the Egyptian Premier League, Egypt Cup and CAF Super Cup, while leading the Egyptian giants to bronze medals at the FIFA Club World Cup in 2020 and 2021.
Earlier in his career, Mosimane also won the Nedbank Cup and SAA Super Eight Cup with SuperSport United.
His achievements extend beyond club football. The coach was named CAF Coach of the Year in 2016 and has collected multiple PSL Coach of the Season awards.
In August 2024, Mosimane was also awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Johannesburg, further recognising his contribution to football and sport.
Now, that experience will be put to the test at international level once again.
With Bafana Bafana coming off their best-ever FIFA World Cup campaign, the expectation will be for Mosimane to build on that progress and establish South Africa as a consistent force on the continent.
