Green Bay Packers: how being on the commissioner exempt list could affect length of possible Josh Jacobs suspension

The Green Bay Packers had a plan for running back throughout the course of the 2026 NFL offseason. Unfortunately, Josh Jacobs getting arrested in May on five charges, including a felony. Obviously, this threw a possible wrench in Green Bay’s plans.

Over the course of the last several weeks, there have been rumblings that Jacobs could be suspended by the NFL. This notion gained traction last week when he was formerly charged on two counts. Jacobs was handed down a charge for battery and another for destruction of property. Both of these are misdemeanors.

On Sunday, the day that every NFL team had to trim their rosters from 90 to 53, Roger Goddell decided to place Jacobs on the commissioner’s exempt list. While on this list, the Packers running back will continue to collect a paycheck. However, he will not be allowed to practice with the team, play in games, or even step foot in Green Bay football facilities.
Rob Demovsky of ESPN shared the following interpretation of what the collective bargaining agreement says regarding players on the commissioner exempt list:
If my understanding of this is correct, time spent on the commissioner exempt list counts toward a future suspension.
Say if in Week 4, the NFL announces a 6-game suspension for Josh Jacobs, he would only miss 3 more games (but loses 6 games of $).

As one can see, the number of games Jacobs spends on the exempt list will count towards the number of games he is potentially suspended. If he is indeed suspended, he will have to forfeit salary to make up for the number of games it is for.
In other words, say he is on the exempt list for the first three games and then is handed a six-game suspension. He would only miss three more games and would not be paid for those games. However, he also will have to forfeit his salary for the first three games.
With Jacobs out, Marshawn Lloyd will be the starting running back in Green Bay. Kaleb Johnson was acquired via trade amid the news from the NFL and will likely serve as the backup. Chris Brooks, who signed a two-year contract earlier this year, will be the third running back on the roster.
