Tight end Dae’Quan Wright was officially waived by the Cleveland Browns on Monday, with plans to return to college football as a fifth-year player. The unusual move is coming in waves, as Wright, along with defensive lineman Zxavian Harris of the New Orleans Saints, is pioneering the trend as they plan to sign with the Louisiana State University football program.

According to Front Office Sports, “a Louisiana state judge granted a temporary restraining order allowing a group of players who participated in NFL training camp and preseason to return to college. As a result, conferences are working to prevent that scenario from becoming a reality.”
In response, the Big Ten was the first conference to act, announcing that NFL players will be banned from playing for their schools earlier today.

“The Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday the unanimous adoption of a conference rule to prohibit football players who have signed a professional contract, were on a professional roster at any point, or declared for the NFL Draft as an underclassman without withdrawing, from maintaining eligibility for athletic competition at a conference institution,” Pete Thamel of ESPN reported.
“The conference continues to evaluate potential rules restricting professional athletes in other sports from conference competition.”
Conferences such as the SEC and ACC met earlier today to discuss eligibility rules and have yet to announce their formal decisions. The matter is still up in the air for the rest of college football, as fans await their coveted conferences to chime in.
