Rutgers finished 2-7 in Big Ten conference play last season, and the Scarlet Knights are hoping that a high-pedigree passer can help bring them back to respectability in 2026.
USA TODAY's Asbury Park Press reports that head coach Greg Schiano has tabbed transfer quarterback Dylan Lonergan as their starter ahead of their first contest against UMass on Sept. 3.

Lonergan is coming off a campaign last year where he threw for 2,025 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions for Boston College. He spent the first two seasons of his college career at Alabama, but only threw a combined eight passes for the Crimson Tide.
Lonergan won the QB battle ahead of AJ Surace, who spent the last couple of seasons backing up Athan Kaliakmanis, who took his talents to the NFL.
