Packers Training Camp Recap: Final open practice before the Cardinals come to town

The Green Bay Packers had about a two-hour practice on Monday that got a chippy at the end. The first fight started between receiver Matthew Golden and edge defender Barryn Sorrell, two Texas Longhorns who were brought to the Packers via last year’s draft. According to reports from the press, linebacker Zaire Franklin and edge defender Lukas Van Ness swung in the scuffle, too.

Then, receiver Will Sheppard and safety Trey Dean III, who was sent off the sideline after this dispute, got into it at the end of practice. After Monday’s fireworks, Sorrell, who is close with Golden, joked, “It’s definitely getting time to hit somebody else.”

Here’s the good news for the Packers: Today’s practice was the final open practice the team will have against each other all training camp. Green Bay’s final practice of camp will be on Wednesday, which will be a joint practice against the Arizona Cardinals.

Here’s what you missed at practice today, besides the fights.

Injuries

Green Bay’s PUP list remains unchanged, with tight end Luke Musgrave (neck), defensive lineman Jordon Riley (ankle), edge defender Micah Parsons (knee) and long snapper Matt Orzech (calf) remaining out of action. Before practice, head coach Matt LaFleur pumped the brakes on Orzech absolutely returning to practice this week, which was hinted at by general manager Brian Gutekunst last week.

Yes, cornerback Brandon Cisse (knee) did return to practice today after suffering a knee injury in Week 2 of the preseason. The only players who missed practice today were receiver Savion Williams (ankle), tight end Thomas Yassmin (knee), defensive lineman Warren Brinson (calf), edge rusher Collin Oliver (calf), edge defender Arron Mosby (undisclosed), cornerback Benjamin St-Juste (hamstring) and safety Javon Bullard (foot). All of these injuries occured during Friday’s game, other than Bullard’s bone bruise.

As far as we know, none of them are long-term injuries.

Offense

The biggest question on the offensive depth chart for the Packers at this point in camp is who the starting guards will be in Week 1. In the preseason, it’s consistently been Jager Burton and Jacob Monk at the position, but neither Aaron Banks nor Zach Bako-Bewele have been thrown in when the bullets are live, and Anthony Belton, who has been Bako-Bewele’s replacement, is still involved in the right guard battle, according to Green Bay’s offensive coaches.

Today, the starters were Banks at left guard (who rotated with Burton) and Monk at right guard. Belton continued to rotate at right tackle with Bako-Bewele. Both Banks and Bako-Bewele are coming off knee injuries that are limiting their full participation in practice.

While Kyle McCord has clearly put up better numbers in the preseason than Tyrod Taylor, it hasn’t been clear in practice that McCord is significantly better than Taylor as a backup option going into the 2026 season. Both quarterbacks threw bad balls in team periods today. We should get an extended look at both in the preseason finale, as LaFleur stated previously that the plan is to use the joint practice against Arizona to load up on reps for the first-team units and use the preseason game for the backups and reserves.

Defense

As far as the defensive lineup goes, Karl Brooks continues to get starts at 3-4 defensive end with Javon Hargrave still being a less than full particpant in practice. At the true nose, Jonathan Ford, who is competing with Nazir Stackhouse and Anthony Campbell, is getting starts regularly (he made back to back starts in the preseason), Keisean Nixon and Brandon Cisse remain the “starting” outside cornerbacks and Kamal Hadden is holding down the fort in the slot with Javon Bullard sidelined.

For what it’s worth, Carrington Valentine and Domani Jackson worked with the second-team defense at cornerback today. This is notable because Valentine was generally ahead of Cisse in the cornerback pecking order this summer, when both players were healthy. These two have been competing for the right cornerback job opposite Nixon. Jackson was also behind Jaylin Simpson in the pecking order in the preseason game last week, the rookie’s debut, and might be moving up the depth chart going into his second week of camp action.

Nixon seemed to have a big day today, as he had an interception of Jordan Love in a two-minute drill and also had a big pass breakup earlier in practice.

Not to be forgotten, despite Ford’s “starts” in practice is Campbell, who is still getting action against first-team offensive linemen as the defensive line rotates frequently. Campbell looked good in one-on-ones today, and continues to build buzz as a pass-rushing threat.

Special Teams

Rookie kicker Trey Smack hit a 60-yard field goal in a two-minute drill today and went three of four overall.
