‘This is pathetic’: Fever coach’s comments on pressure of coaching Caitlin Clark spark outrage
· Yahoo Sports
Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White has what many consider the toughest job in the WNBA. White has had to manage not only the usual scrutiny that comes with coaching superstar Caitlin Clark, but also the added controversy surrounding the team after reserve guard Sophie Cunningham’s comments against transgender women participating in women’s sports.
After the Fever’s second-straight loss on Saturday night amidst a tough stretch of three road games in four days, White spoke candidly about how she deals with the intense pressure that comes with being Indiana’s head coach.

“You know, I think I lean on my family, you know, I lean on my mentors, I lean on my peers,” White said in Saturday night’s post-game presser. “You know, some of the coaches in our league, like, I’ll text back and forth.
“And, you know, some of the coaches that, you know, are in college coaching are a lot of my mentors, you know, I’ll lean on them. And, you know, sometimes, and I said this last year, we were going through different circumstances.
Steph White speaks on her position as Fever HC, which has been dubbed the “hardest job in league.”

“Oftentimes, you know, I’ll get the reassuring text message, and even if I don’t respond, like, I hear it and I sense it, and it gives me perspective. And that’s important. You know, I lean on our staff and talking about, you know, Bree and Austin and Karima, you know, Telly and now Klopp. I lean on them because the reality is, just like players, there are some days where it’s like you just don’t have it, right? Like, you just don’t have it.”
White also talked about her experience in learning the different ways to lead.
“As we get older, we learn different things that, you know, we’re not always leading from the front. And this is one of the things we talk about with our team all the time. Sometimes you’re leading from the side, sometimes you’re leading from behind, sometimes you’re on the floor, sometimes you’re not.
“Sometimes you need somebody to lift you up, you know, sometimes you need to lift somebody else up. And, um, you know, I think that this season in particular, I’ve really tried to live the message that I try to talk about and lean into the privilege that I have regardless of the circumstance. And I’m just thankful for the village and these players. I mean, look, these players are really incredible. Like the way that they’re able to minimize the outside noise, the way they will show up for each other and for me, you know, every day.”
“The Fever deserve a real professional”
As insightful as White’s words were, many fans on social media felt they were indicative of her unfitness for her current role.
“Handed a generational talent on a platter and you’re talking about who you can lean on like this is some tragedy. You’re the luckiest coach in the league. Maybe act like it?” one fan posted on X.
“The Fever deserve a real professional at head coach. Someone who doesn’t give a sh*t about the outside noise & sees pressure as a privilege,” someone else added.
“Well, this is pathetic,” one fan posted.
“She’d do everyone a favor if she just left,” another fan added.
While fans may not like how White handles being the leader of the Fever, the reality is that her players are standing behind her, and that’s all that really matters. It was only a year ago that White led an injury-depleted Fever squad within an overtime period of a WNBA Finals berth. The organization and its players feel that have the right person at the helm. It would only help the team if the fans got on board.
