Dodgers have an update on Andy Pages after his exit in Pirates game

· Yahoo Sports

The Los Angeles Dodgers have rebounded after losing seven of eight to begin August. They are 7-3 since Aug. 10, and overall are 77-51. That is good for first place in the National League West and the No. 2 seed in the league.

They just began a three-game series at home versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was Yoshinobu Yamamoto with the start for Los Angeles, his 23rd of the season. He threw 6 ⅓ innings while allowing two runs and striking out nine.

During the bottom of the third inning, the Dodgers started a rally with a double from Hunter Feduccia and single from Shohei Ohtani. Center fielder Andy Pages stepped to the plate, and after working the count 1-1, was hit in the left hand by a 100.2 MPH sinker.

The pitch came from young Pittsburgh right-hander Bubba Chandler, and was his sixth time beaning a batter this season. Pages stayed in the game for the fourth inning, but was lifted from the game in top of the fifth.

Kiké Hernández was put in at center field for Pages, his ninth game there this season. Pages, a 2026 All-Star, has transformed into one of the best center fielders in the game during only year three of his big league career.

In 128 games this season, the 25-year-old is slashing .272/.338/.458 (.796 OPS) with 21 home runs and 80 RBIs. Pages has spent most of his time in the second spot in the order, after Ohtani and before Freddie Freeman, although the two were flipped for Friday’s game.

Later in the game, the Dodgers gave an update on the outfielder via their official X account. It is a left hand contusion for Pages.

Possible temporary replacement and effects

As noted, Hernández took over in center field for this game. The soon-to-be 35-year-old has not played much in center since Pages’ debut in 2024. However, he has spent a decent amount of time there in his career.

The Dodgers do have other options if they choose. Tommy Edman has experience in center field, but he has been playing second base almost every night recently. Bench outfielder Alex Call would be a more permanent solution potentially.

Call has played great defense in center field during his career, and has been a better hitter than Hernández during their careers. The decision will all depend on how Pages reacts to the contusion in the next couple of days.
