Rahaan Edavalath proved an unlikely hero as Worcestershire assumed the upper hand on day two against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham.
An injury replacement for wicketkeeper-batsman Gareth Roderick, and making his first Championship appearance of the season, the inexperienced right hander took his chance.
He demonstrated a cool head to register a career-best 63 as Worcestershire mustered 205-7 in reply to Gloucestershire's first-innings 150.
Edavalath staged a crucial stand of 79 with Pears captain Brett D'Oliveira, who was 49 not out when bad light brought a premature end with 18 overs remaining and Worcestershire 55 runs ahead.
Slow left-armer Sai Kishore claimed 3-56 for Gloucestershire on his debut, while Will Williams and Ed Middleton took two wickets apiece as Gloucestershire kept themselves in the hunt.
The home side under-achieved in their first innings, eventually being bowled out for 150 as Ben Allison added two more scalps to his first-day haul to finish with a career-best return of 5-19.
