ETSU head football coach Will Healy closer to naming his starting quarterback

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The ETSU Buccaneer football team was back in full pads Wednesday as they get ready for their second scrimmage of fall camp this weekend.

For the quarterbacks, this could be a make-or-break scrimmage, since second-year head coach Will Healy says they will narrow the race down to two between Michigan transfer Jadyn Davis, returner Jake McNamara, Jackson Byrd, and Louisville transfer Mason Mims. In their first scrimmage, the offense struggled and turned the ball over too many times—largely because of the defense, though not having one single voice in the backfield could also be part of the problem.
“I’m not trying to run from naming who the starting quarterback is. I will tell these guys quickly because I think our team needs to know. But so, you know, in the next weekend, I think we’ll know who the starter is, and we’ll name it and roll with it. This isn’t going to be ‘let me wait until the first game so they don’t know who to prepare for.’ They don’t know any of these guys anyway. It doesn’t really matter,” Healy said.
“I don’t think there’s any really complications. I think it’s good to get all three back there, all three rotating. I think at the end of the day, I trust the coaches, I trust the quarterback. Whoever’s going to be out there, I’ll be blocking my tail off for him. So, you know, just waiting to see and just looking forward to it,” offensive lineman Sam Browder said.
The Bucs’ next scrimmage is set for next Saturday, Aug. 15, in the morning at William B. Greene Jr. Stadium.
