Royce White shocked the world by announcing he wanted to enter the WNBA draft in 2027. The former NBA player has now gone a step further by buying his first wig, kickstarting what he described as his “feminine era”.

White said he now identifies as a woman and should be allowed to compete in the WNBA.

What is Royce White’s Demand?

Royce White joined Enes Kanter Freedom in expressing a desire to join the WNBA, saying the league’s rules on transgender athletes were not clear.

“I’m transgender. I’m a woman. I identify as sometimes identifying as a woman for purpose of basketball, professional basketball, so I’ll be declaring for the WNBA draft in 2027 as well,” Royce White told OutKick/Fox News Digital.

“I think I’d be unstoppable. But I’m a team-first guy. I’m a pass-first kind of player. I do the little things. I led my team in all five major stat categories at Iowa State University, so I do a little bit of everything. I’ll do whatever the coach needs me to do. I’ll do whatever the girls need me to do.”

Royce called on the league to clearly define its position on trans athletes in women’s sports.

Hours before White’s announcement, Freedom said he had reviewed the WNBA’s eligibility criteria and that he qualified to play.

With the debate about trans athletes in women’s sports raging on, the WNBA released a statement saying it would not be used as a “political pawn”.

“The WNBPA represents 200+ individual people with different lived experiences, cultures, lifestyles and opinions. We ‌embrace justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion,” the statement read. “Hate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group of people, including transgender people, only fuel fear, division, and harm.”
